About

Born in the tea estates of Darjeeling, Sudhanshu Saria is a National Award-winning filmmaker. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Film and Photography from Ithaca College in New York.

 

His most recent feature, ULAJH (2024) starring Janhvi Kapoor, Gulshan Devaiah and Roshan Mathew, is an espionage thriller he directed and co-wrote for Junglee Pictures (RAAZI, BADHAAI HO). The film was released in cinemas worldwide and is now streaming on Netflix, where it debuted at number one position on Netflix India’s charts and trended in their Top 10 for a full month besides also making it to the platform's global top 10 charts for Non-English language feature films.

Sudhanshu also made his series debut with BIG GIRLS DON'T CRY (2024),  a Young Adult series for Amazon Prime, on which he served as the Showrunner, Writer and Director. Focused on the lives of young girls in boarding schools, the show launched nine new faces and was nominated for the Filmfare OTT awards in several categories.

The year ended with the release of SAHIBA (2024), a film he wrote, directed, edited and produced as the visual companion to Jasleen Royal's song. Starring Vijay Deverakonda and Radhikka Madan, Sahiba topped the Spotify charts in India at #1, entered Global Spotify charts with the Music Video still trending in the Top 100 on YouTube with more than 60 million views.

He also produced TAPS (2023), a short film about queer love which was written and directed by Arvind Caulagi. The script won first place in a national contest run jointly by KASHISH Film Festival and Lotus Visual Productions and was eventually produced in collaboration with them. The film made waves at prestigious festivals like Vancouver Queer Film Festival, Beijing Queer Film Festival among others and is now released by the company.

His next feature film as writer, director and producer, SANAA, featuring Radhika Madan, Pooja Bhatt, Sohum Shah and Shikha Talsania in lead roles is currently in post-production. An international cut of the film made its World Premiere in the Official Competition at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Black Nights and then went on to festivals like the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, International Film Festival of India (Panorama Section), and the UK Asian Film Festival where Radhika won the award for Best Actor and Sudhanshu won the award for Best Director.

KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK (2019), a 40-minute psychological thriller he made earlier won him India’s highest honour for film, the National Award for Best Directing in the non-Feature section. It world-premiered at Busan Film Festival, won the Best Screenplay prize at New York Indian Film Festival and was acquired on a worldwide basis by MUBI.

Saria's directorial debut, LOEV (2017), was a critically acclaimed queer road-trip romance. It played to wide critical acclaim at festivals like SXSW, Tallinn Black Nights, Frameline, Mumbai Film Festival and BFI Flare before it was acquired for release on a worldwide exclusive basis by Netflix.

Before turning to tell his own stories, Sudhanshu worked as an acquisition, development and sales executive for companies like New Films International and Peace Arch Entertainment where he helped develop, presale, finance and distribute a diverse range of film and television projects in partnership with broadcasters and distributors around the world; Kabuley, Alphabet Killer, The Tudors, Fragments to name a few.
